Erewash Conservatives recently held a special “thank you” social evening for everyone who volunteered in our Long Eaton North by-election campaign — and what a fantastic evening it was.
Campaigns are often remembered for polling day itself, but the real story is everything that happens beforehand. From knocking on doors in all weathers, to delivering leaflets, organising data, putting up posters, staffing committee rooms, and offering encouragement when it was needed most — our volunteers were at the heart of it all.
This social evening was a small way of recognising the time, energy and dedication so many people gave to the campaign. It was wonderful to see familiar faces gathered together, sharing stories from the doorstep, laughing about memorable moments, and reflecting on what we achieved as a team.
The power of volunteers
Local democracy depends on people who are willing to step forward and get involved. Our Long Eaton North campaign showed exactly what can happen when a group of committed individuals come together with a shared purpose.
Some of our volunteers were experienced campaigners. Others were getting involved for the very first time. Every single contribution — whether an hour delivering leaflets or weeks of sustained effort — made a genuine difference.
It is easy to underestimate the impact of giving your time, but campaigns are built on thousands of small acts of generosity. Conversations on doorsteps, friendly smiles, early mornings and late evenings — these are what bring a campaign to life.
Why saying thank you matters
In busy political life, it can be all too easy to move quickly from one campaign to the next. But taking the time to say “thank you” really matters.
Volunteers are not paid. They give their time because they believe in their community and want to see positive change. Recognising that commitment is not just polite — it is essential. Appreciation strengthens teams, builds lasting friendships, and reminds everyone that they are valued.
The evening was a simple gathering, but it carried an important message: we could not do this without you.
Looking ahead
The energy and teamwork shown during the Long Eaton North by-election will continue to shape our work in the months ahead. Campaigns come and go, but the relationships built through them endure.
To everyone who volunteered — whether on one evening or throughout the entire campaign — thank you. Your commitment, resilience and community spirit are what make local politics work.
And if you would like to get involved in future campaigns, we would be delighted to welcome you. There is always room for more people who care about Erewash and want to make a difference.
