Residents enjoying a tipple in pubs across Erewash over the August Bank Holiday will find new beer mats on the tables . . . all with a message that promotes safe drinking.
Erewash Borough Council has joined forces with the Police Licensing and Safer Neighbourhood Team for a campaign which will focus on the holiday weekend and on telling people how many units are in the alcoholic drinks they may be enjoying - like a pint of beer, glass of wine or gin and tonic.
A key aim of the campaign is to encourage residents to stay healthy by drinking sensibly – while it is hoped that the beer mat messages will also help stop alcohol-related crime and disorder over the holiday weekend.
Pubs across the borough are backing the campaign and will take delivery of the beers mats and supporting posters in the lead up to the big summer Bank Holiday weekend and will, where possible, promote products that have lower alcoholic units in them.
Councillor Barbara Harrison, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Environment, says:
“The August weekend is traditionally a busy one for pubs as people make the most of the end of summer Bank Holiday - so it is a great time to do a focussed campaign that aims to make drinkers stop and think about the amount they are drinking and the harm they are doing to themselves.
“The council and its partners are committed to reducing alcohol related crime and disorder in the borough and this campaign follows a series of initiatives over the last two years that have promoted the ‘Drinkaware’ message.”
